Bladder Cancer Information

The bladder is a part of the body’s urinary system, along with the kidneys, ureters, the urethra and the sphincter muscles. The organs in the urinary system work together to produce, store, and dispel urine.

Bladder cancer is a life-threatening disease that forms within the tissue of the bladder, the organ that stores urine. This occurs when malignant (cancerous) cells divide and invade any or all three layers of the urinary bladder. Cancer of the bladder can take many physical forms (nobule, thickening or tumor) and has the ability to spread to other parts of the body, including the lungs and the liver.

In 2010, an estimated 70,530 people were diagnosed with bladder cancer and 14,680 lost their lives to the disease.
